What is BioOil?
BioOil is a clean, renewable liquid fuel made through Dynamotive’s patented Fast Pyrolysis process. BioOil is formed from biomass such as sawdust, or bagasse from sugarcane meaning it does not require food-crops as feedstock. BioOil is targeted to become a fossil fuel substitute since it shares many of the same characteristics as Fuel Oil No.2 and can be readily used in Heat and Power generation processes.
BioOil is created from cellulosic (plant) material, which makes it available, sustainable and environmentally friendly. Around the world, humans burn over 8.7 billion tonnes of biomass annually, which can be potentially converted into a high-density fuel source, BioOil. With this abundance of feedstock, BioOil is a viable alternative to protect the environment and is a strong alternative for the industrial fuels markets.
BioOil is considered Green House Gas Neutral since it only puts back into the atmosphere what was initially removed by the plant during its lifetime. Because of these characteristics, BioOil is EcoLogo Certified as a clean fuel and can earn Carbon Credits.
Applications
Heat and Steam Production
BioOil and BioOil Plus are an effective substitute for light fuel oil, heavy fuel oil, or natural gas in industrial, commercial burners and boilers. These are relatively simple applications requiring modifications to fuel nozzles and handling systems. Other applications include industrial kilns, district heating, commercial heating systems, and other industrial energy systems.
Power Generation
BioOil can be effectively used in power generation, and combined heat and power applications. After the world’s first commercial scale run of a gas turbine using BioOil produced from pyrolysis, Dynamotive and Magellan Aerospace jointly announced, in March 2004, that BioOil can effectively replace fossil fuels, including natural gas, in gas turbines for combined heat and power generation.
Industrial fuel, Cogeneration
Dynamotive’s successful burner tests have created opportunities for early commercial applications of BioOil as a clean burning fuel to replace natural gas, diesel and other liquid fossil fuels in the multi-billion dollar industrial boilers and kiln markets.
Lime kilns and lumber kilns
Field tests showed that BioOil and natural gas were equivalent in thermal performance and product quality.
Boilers
BioOil is an effective substitute for diesel, heavy fuel oil, light fuel oil, or natural gas in essentially any type of boiler where these fuels are fired or contemplated to be fired. These are relatively simple applications requiring basic modifications limited mainly to fuel nozzles and transport systems. Dynamotive already has demonstrated the successful burning of BioOil in a variety of boilers.
Mobile Fuels
BioOil can be further refined to transport fuel quality by undergoing hydro-reforming and hydro-treatment processes. Click Here to learn more about Dynamotive’s mobile fuels.
